In-between: an urban ecosystem
Concept developed by Anastasia Verteouri, Chrysostomos Theodoropoulos and Sophia Psyrra for the open architectural ideas competition for the restoration and reuse of the livestock facilities complex and the surrounding area, a property of the Port of Thessaloniki.
The intervention
... How do you reinterpret a fragmented history that is part of the history of the Port City? How do you restore a set of different buildings with modern methods and give it back to the urban landscape? How do they retain their atmosphere, avoiding musealization? ...
These are the questions we ask and respond with our proposal. The central idea for the complex and its surroundings is the activation of a fragment of the port history and the reintegration with the current port.
This is achieved by the coupling of two apparently opposite poles: of the abandoned building stock on one hand, and the natural element on the other. These nodes create an extended field relation, a long expanded region, in which the elements interact and complement each other. With the abandonment of the building infrastructure, the physical element takes front stage, and although it is not designed, it has imposed on the outside and crept into the interior of buildings. The boundaries of the construction elements have been softened by the dynamic development of the natural element. The birth of this extended area, where the natural meets built has already started for some time. The coupling of the two poles already exists. And we want to design it.
